7^th grade Math – What to expect

 

Students should expect homework every night.  Math is a contact sport; you can’t learn it without doing it.  Math takes practice.  There will be homework every night.  However, if your child is struggling with the homework, please allow them to stop doing it.  I would rather they come to school with questions and unfinished homework, then get frustrated and upset.  

Students should expect maintenance quizzes every day – or most days.  Maintenances are quizzes aimed at remembering past skills taught.  Math is also like a pyramid; you need a solid foundation to build on. Students cannot learn math just for the test and then forget it.  They must build on that skill.  They need to remember each skill taught.  Maintenance quizzes count for 30% of their grade.  If the class struggles with a topic in maintenance, I will reteach it.  

The topics we will cover in 7^th grade Math are;

• Ratios and Proportional Relationships
  1. Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems
• The Number System
  1. Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers. 
• Expressions and Equations
  1. Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions
  2. Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.
• Geometry
  1. Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. 
  2. Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angel measure, area, surface area, and volume.
• Statistics and Probability
  1. Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population
  2. Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations
  3. Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.
