5^{th} grade Math – What to expect
Students should expect homework every night. Math is a contact sport; you can’t learn it without doing it. Math takes practice. There will be homework every night.
Students should expect maintenance quizzes every day – or most days. Maintenances are quizzes aimed at remembering past skills taught. Math is also like a pyramid; you need a solid foundation to build on. Students cannot learn math just for the test and then forget it. They must build on that skill. They need to remember each skill taught. Maintenance quizzes count for 30% of their grade. If the class struggles with a topic in maintenance, I will reteach it.
The topics we will cover in 5^{th} grade Math are;
Please feel free to contact me with any idea’s, questions, concerns, anything. It’s important that we work together for success.

Hello, Hello, Hello
In 5th grade math, we took a pause. We were learning too many new concepts, so I decided to stop, review and give a test. It was today, on Fractions, Chapter 4 sections 1-6. Then we will finish up Chapter 4 - Fractions - and have test on the whole chapter next week. These little tests will hopefully build up their math muscles :)
No Homework tonight
Happy New Year!! 2020 - Oh the things we will see!!
5th grade is working on fractions. Fractions are little division problems. A lot of the 5th grade students are still struggling with division. If time allows - please have your child do extra practice on division problems each night - they can re-do any division problem from their workbook. Just give them the problem to do on loose leaf. Thanks
Homework -workbook page 46 #38-48

5th grade is working on division - two digit division.
Some students are really struggling with this - mainly because some students do not know their times tables. Times tables are so very important! From now until forever they will use their times tables! Your child needs to know his/her times tables by heart. This past week we had a maintenance on times tables division and a few really struggled - Please look at their test folder this week - if your child did not get in the 90's on their division maintenance please consider getting times table flash cards for them The dollar store sells times table flash cards. Your child should do 5 minutes a night until they can raddle them off easily.
We will have a test on Monday before Thanksgiving break - on whatever we accomplished. We are working on Chapter 3 sections 10-13 possibly section 14. Workbook pages 34-37 or 38 depending on how far we get.
Test on Monday November 25

5A - workbook page 32 #2-18 evens
5B - No homework
Week of 11/4/19
5A and 5B are at the same spot in Math.
We are working on one digit division. This has been a hard concept for them. So I did not give them homework over the weekend, I felt they needed more instruction before they could try it on their own. They do have homework tonight. Workbook page 28#1-8 and they need to do a check for 4 of the problems. They must do this work in their copybooks. There is not enough room for the work in their workbook. Chapter 3 on Division is a very long chapter, so I am going to break it up into two separate tests. The first test will be on Chapter 3 sections 1-6 Division with one digit. The test should be either Friday 11/8/19 or early next week. I will let you know for sure. The student should study pages 26 -31 in their workbook - but we are only up to page 28 today. So we'll see how it goes. In Math - the only way to learn it - is to do it.
10/21/19
5A and 5B - Homework workbook page 21 #1-15 odd
10/15/19 - 5th grade is learning about Multiplication - properties of multiplication, patterns in multiplication, estimating products, zeros in the number, and decimals.
